Solar Charge Controller

The smallest and simplest charge controller charges the battery based on the voltage and current produced by the panel(s) and only regulates the current intensity according to the battery's charging status.

Independent photovoltaic systems, as opposed to grid-connected systems, charge energy generated by the panels into dedicated batteries.

The component responsible for this process is the solar charge controller.

There are several types of Solar Charge Controllers, depending on the power and requirements of the solar system.

The smallest and simplest charge controller charges the battery based on the voltage and current produced by the panel(s) and only regulates the current intensity according to the battery's charging status. The main advantage of such a controller is its low price, while the main disadvantage is partial utilization of the energy produced by the solar panel.

When it comes to larger systems where the importance of energy utilization from the panels increases, more sophisticated charge controllers with MPPT capability are used to maximize the output from the panel(s), as well as DC to DC voltage conversion, allowing for higher operating voltage and the serial connection of multiple panels. Additionally, the battery charging process is more advanced and based on a complex charging algorithm (which, in some products, is tailored to the battery type and manufacturer).

Another important feature is the ability of multiple charge controllers to work in parallel and simultaneously charge the same bank of batteries. This requires a communication infrastructure between the charge controllers for coordination. This feature is not available in every controller.

In especially large systems, it is possible to implement a modular Solar Charge Controller made up of several units, each with a few kilowatts. This allows for a system that can be expanded in the future (SCALABLE) and has built-in redundancy, enabling the system to continue functioning and supplying most of the energy even in the event of a failure in one of the units.

Advice provides a variety of solar charge controllers with various power outputs and levels of sophistication, according to the application and customer requirements. The controllers are also integrated into the comprehensive solutions offered by the company for independent photovoltaic systems.
